How to Choose an HVAC Contractor in Ontario

Ontario homeowners comparing HVAC contractors and installation quotes

The contractor you choose can matter as much as the furnace, air conditioner or heat pump you buy. Excellent equipment can perform poorly when incorrectly sized or installed.

Verify credentials

For fuels-related work, the Technical Standards and Safety Authority’s contractor registry helps Ontario homeowners check registered fuels contractors.

Get several written quotes

Natural Resources Canada’s residential heating-equipment guidance recommends obtaining at least three quotes. Compare equipment, installation scope, sizing, warranties, recommendations, upgrades and total price—not price alone.

Ask how equipment was sized

Be cautious when a recommendation is based only on the equipment currently installed. Ask how the home’s heating or cooling requirements were calculated.

Identify the exact equipment

A proposal should specify manufacturer, model, capacity, efficiency, matched indoor and outdoor components, and thermostat or control requirements.

Compare installation scope

  • Removal and new equipment
  • Labour, venting and refrigerant work
  • Electrical and duct modifications
  • Condensate drainage and thermostat
  • Permits where applicable
  • Startup, testing, disposal and taxes
  • Warranty

Understand warranties

Ask separately about manufacturer and labour warranties, coverage periods, registration requirements, claims and labour coverage. Keep all paperwork.

Verify rebate claims

Programs can have equipment, contractor, eligibility, pre-approval and deadline requirements. Never assume an incentive is guaranteed from a sales presentation.

Watch for pressure and vague proposals

Warning signs include unclear equipment, vague pricing, unverified rebate guarantees, reluctance to provide written details, unusually large immediate payment demands, refusal to explain sizing and unjustified pressure to decide immediately.

Questions to ask

  1. Why do you recommend this system?
  2. How did you size it?
  3. What exact equipment will I receive?
  4. What is and is not included?
  5. What warranties apply?
  6. Are permits required?
  7. Are there current incentives?
  8. Who performs installation?
  9. What happens if there is a problem afterward?

Use reviews as one signal

Reviews can provide context, but should not replace credential checks, written proposals and direct questions.
