Furnace Not Heating? 10 Things to Check First

Ontario homeowner checking a furnace that is not heating the home

Few HVAC problems get your attention faster than waking up to a cold Ontario home. If your furnace is not producing enough heat—or is not running—these safe homeowner checks may help before you call a technician.

1. Check the thermostat

Make sure it is on, set to Heat, set above room temperature and displaying normally. Replace batteries if needed and check that the schedule was not changed.

2. Inspect the furnace filter

A severely dirty filter can restrict airflow. Natural Resources Canada recommends regular filter inspection and maintenance. Install replacements in the correct direction.

3. Check the furnace power switch

Make sure the nearby electrical switch is in the ON position.

4. Check the breaker once

If it has tripped, reset it once. If it trips again, stop and have the electrical problem professionally diagnosed.

5. Check vents and return-air grilles

Ensure furniture, rugs, boxes and curtains are not blocking airflow.

6. Look and listen safely

From outside the equipment, note water, unusual noises, repeated cycling, warning lights or unusual smells. Do not remove components.

7. Check exterior openings from a safe location

Snow or debris can obstruct high-efficiency furnace vents. Do not climb or attempt unsafe access.

8. Consider airflow and home heat loss

Restricted airflow, ductwork, insulation, air leakage, blower issues and equipment sizing can all affect comfort.

9. Record what happened

Note strange noises, breaker trips, gradual performance changes, thermostat changes, frequent cycling and previous occurrences.

10. Know when to stop

Basic checks are useful; dismantling a gas furnace is not. TSSA’s registered fuels contractor information helps Ontario homeowners verify appropriate contractors for regulated fuel work.

Gas and carbon-monoxide safety

If a CO alarm activates, you smell gas, occupants have possible exposure symptoms, or you suspect combustion or venting problems, leave the affected area and follow emergency guidance. Do not keep operating questionable equipment.

When to call an HVAC professional

  • The furnace will not start after basic checks
  • It repeatedly shuts down or trips a breaker
  • Airflow remains poor
  • Unusual noises continue
  • The home cannot maintain temperature
  • You suspect combustion, fuel or venting trouble

Repair or replace?

For older equipment and a significant repair, ask for both repair and replacement costs. Read our Furnace Repair Cost guide, repair-or-replace guide and Furnace Replacement Cost guide.
